Initiation grounds, Rainbow Valley Magic

Initiation grounds, Rainbow Valley Magic

I scouted this area in Australia's Red Center the night before. This was photographed at first light and I was lucky enough to get the moon in the saddle. This is a mens initiation area for the Arrente aboriginal people and it was an honor to be there. I was sure to ask for permission to the ancients spirits who are caretakers of this magical place. The light I found to be quite magical here. Always warm and unique.

I am still trying to find out what the name of this bush, or plant is. If anyone knows, please let me know.

Red Center, Rainbow Valley, Australia

Red Center, Rainbow Valley, Australia

The last rays of light illuminate the clay-pan foreground in rainbow valley located in the red center of the Australian outback. Certainly one of the more interesting displays of light I have photographed. This image was made from the very first squeezing of my shutter while in Australia. This is sacred land to the Arrernte aboriginal people who have lived here for over 50,000 years. You can feel their spirit here and it is very important to offer respect, be careful of where you walk, and to ask for permission to be here. The red center's surrounding earth is very rich in iron and other minerals which creates the deep crimson colors that are most intense at sunrise and sunset. The stars are very bright, and the blue in the sky is more cyan because of the lack of atmospheric pollution. In the northern hemisphere the sky has more magenta to it because of the much greater load of pollutants. This area of Aussie gets more than 3,500 hours of sunshine a year. It felt like home to me.
