The ego and the artist.

If the ego has difficulties with anything, facts have got to be on top of that list. Artist tend to have fantastic egos and therefore would be wise to fully understand what facts are. ~dr

蛇の木 The Serpent Tree.

This is the famous maple tree at the Portland Japanese garden. It's an older photo I recently got around to processing. I never intended to post because so many have a photo of it. However, after revisiting the photo I think the light and atmosphere are unique enough to share, and I really like it now.

Memory of Paradise.

"Soon the child’s clear eye is clouded over by ideas and opinions, preconceptions and abstractions. Simple free being becomes encrusted with the burdensome armor of the ego. Not until years later does an instinct come that a vital sense of mystery has been withdrawn. The sun glints through the pines, and the heart is pierced in a moment of beauty and strange pain, like a memory of paradise. After that day… we become seekers." - Peter Matthiessen

Black and white dream, San Joaquin, Ecuador

Black and white dream, San Joaquin, Ecuador

Puffy white clouds dance in the mottled light of the San Joaquin valley.

This is one of several images I made on this fine morning. I was visiting my friend, Mohan, in Loja province of Ecuador. There are trails right from his house. I got up at 4:30 in the morning and started hiking up in the Andes in the dark. It can be kind of spooky out there, your headlamp lights up all kinds of creatures eyeballs staring at you. You have to be mindful of fer-de-lance snakes (which will kill you), Ocelots, Banditos (yes robbers!) and a host of other dangers. I climbed about three thousand feet (started at five thousand). The weather was so perfect. I didn't even need a shirt. In addition to this image I was rewarded with quite the light show, which I will share in the near future.

Cheers!

My Solitude, amidst the maples

Sunstar amidst the maples, My front yard, Portland, Oregon.

Just shot this photo this evening. I'm fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. I live within Portland city limits and yet, I have privacy, not counting the deer and other wild animals, but they are part of my solitude.
